Join ed-activist, researcher and consultant Ian Symmonds as he gives a not-so-typical, 30,000 foot view of future trends facing private education today with a decidedly business application twist. Ian will present a fresh and provocative look at what thought leaders are saying about the future of education from a business strategy standpoint. Business officers attending will get critical takeaways and practical applications for their work and school planning.
After lunch you will have the opportunity to choose a breakout session – the topics include:
1) Self Insured Health & One School’s Approach – presented by Lisa Braiterman, Brewster Academy
2) HR Topics: including student gender identity, independent contractors and FMLA – presented by Attorney Sara Hellstedt, Bernstein Shur

The afternoon wraps up with a presentation by David Grant, the former President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and author of The Social Profit Handbook: The Essential Guide to Setting Goals, Assessing Outcomes, and Achieving Success for Mission-Driven Organizations. David will present Measuring What Matters at Independent Schools. What does success look like in an organization like an independent school whose mission is multi-faceted? What does it look like to be an effective business manager at such a place? How does change happen, or not happen at our schools? Drawing on his book, The Social Profit Handbook, David Grant will lead us in an exploration of how our assumptions about assessment and evaluation shape the systems and cultures we create in our schools, and how those systems and cultures can be strengthened by "measuring what matters." David’s book will be given to each participant at the conference.
Wednesday evening is our Corporate Partner Reception with raffle fun and the annual dinner will include speaker Tim Soley, President, East Brown Cow Management Inc. Tim will talk about sustainable design in commercial buildings using the Hyatt Hotel in Portland as the case study.
Thursday Morning begins with a presentation from Todd Horn, Executive Coach & Board Consultant who will discuss: The Strategic CFO – How to Capitalize this Asset. Change is a given, how does it impact your role as CFO? In this session Todd will combine elements of design thinking and executive coaching to offer a range of practical tools to help you to be a strategic leader in your school, strengthen your partnership with the head/CEO, and understand your role on a successful senior leadership team. That said, sustainability isn’t just about the school. This session will also cover tools to help you to thrive with an increasing range of duties and responsibilities as CFO.
