Profile |
Waynflete School’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of their students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. The aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.
Waynflete offers a student-centered, rigorous, college preparatory curriculum which emphasizes the importance of the individual and encourages students to assume responsibility for, and be participants in, their own learning. Lower, middle, and upper school divisions encompass grades from pre-kindergarten to 12th. The School strives for a culturally, economically and geographically diverse student body. Enrolled students currently come from 49 communities in southern and central Maine.
Waynflete’s campus is located on three acres in the West End of Portland, a primarily residential neighborhood. Nearby, the School owns Fore River Fields, a 30-acre athletic complex and nature sanctuary). In 2009 an addition to the School’s Arts Center was completed, which now includes a 276 seat theater, rehearsal space, additional classrooms and a multi-purpose gym.
Waynflete's Athletic Program offers a variety of competitive and recreational sports. Students are required to participate in one activity program per season, with options including competitive sports and alternative activities such as yoga and dance.
