1:00 pm - 4:30 pm Bridgton Academy Site Visit - Focus on Advisory: Meeting Students Where They Are to Shape a Path for Success
Presenters: Bridgton Academy Administration, Faculty & Staff
Location: Bridgton Academy, Bridgton, ME
Description: A prime value-add of an independent school education is advising programs, where students can be assured of being known and develop a deep sense of connection to their school. With increasing fluctuations in enrollment, many schools welcome students at non-traditional entry points, and therefore strategies for quickly creating relationships and instilling school culture are essential to a vibrant advising program. ISANNE is thrilled to partner with Bridgton Academy for its Fall Student Life and Academic Leaders conference. Bridgton is the only college preparatory school in the country exclusively devoted to a one-year postgraduate program for young men. Although the school serves a niche market, their advising program is in a unique position. With only 33 weeks to build relationships and school culture in meaningful ways, Bridgton offers skills and experience that can benefit all schools.
Meet with the members of their student and academic leadership teams, as well as Bridgton students, for an afternoon of sessions devoted to topics such as: 1) Creating space for students to share vulnerability through advisory, 2) Partnering with students to help them navigate successes and failures in the college process, 3) Developing advising curriculum and programming 4) Overseeing advising program assignments, budgets, and faculty buy-in. We are looking forward to an afternoon of rich conversation on a wide range of topics.

Presenter: Lauren Porosoff, Author, Educator, Consultant (See bio below)
Description: In independent schools, we embed definitions of success into our institutional missions, academic rubrics, and behavior codes. Any time we ask what success means, we’re asking values questions. What if, in addition to helping students succeed according to our expectations, we also empower them to develop their own definitions of success, based on their own values, and bring those definitions of success to their learning, their work, and their relationships at school?
In this highly experiential workshop that’s informed by evidence-based psychological science, we’ll learn protocols that help students redefine success based on their own values, and enact their values at school. After learning each protocol by doing it ourselves, we’ll reflect on the process, see a classroom example, and discuss how to implement the protocol with our students. Along the way, we’ll discover some of the psychological science of empowering students to redefine success for themselves.
Participants will be able to…
- lead protocols that empower students to define success in accordance with their personal values and enact their values at school.
- explain how deictic and hierarchical framing help students develop values-consistent approaches to their learning.
- integrate values work into every stage of an academic unit.
