1:45 – 4:45 PM “An Effective Tool for Navigating Challenging Conversations”
Presenter: CMPartners, Cambridge, MA
Description: Heads of independent schools constantly engage with constituents as diverse as faculty, staff, students, prospective students, parents, alumni/ae, other donors, accreditation personnel and others who have or are considering an important relationship with the school. Whether it is speaking with a faculty member concerning the importance of his/her 24/7 commitment to the school, enticing a prospective donor into making a significant gift to the school or a parent about a disciplinary issue with their child, the Head must be able to influence and engage productively. A critical and necessary early step in this process is to develop a thorough understanding of the unique motivations, needs and concerns that drive the other person’s approach to the issue; What is important to them and why? With this knowledge, Heads can engage in a way that addresses those core interests and, thus, influence in a truly durable way. In this session, we will introduce a conversation tool, first developed by a researcher at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which is essential in this process of uncovering others’ core interests. Through a combination of presentation and interactive exercises and role plays, participants will gain experience using this tool so that, at the end of our time together, they will be comfortable bringing it into their daily practice.
