Position Opening: Tilton School is seeking an experienced and innovative financial leader of outstanding character for our next Chief Financial Officer (CFO) via a national search. The CFO is a key administrator reporting directly to the Head of School and serves on the Leadership Team in a collaborative environment. The CFO provides strategic direction to help ensure appropriate and maximum use of financial resources for success in the school’s future aligned to our strategic vision outlined in our Tilton Tomorrow Campaign. The position opens in June 2020 but the School would entertain any earlier inception date after March 31, 2020 to assist with a smooth transition of leadership.

Job Description Summary: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the overall financial and operational needs of the school. The CFO oversees the long-term financial health of the school, implementing short and long-term goals in support of the school’s mission and vision. As a key member of the Leadership Team, the CFO serves as a strategic partner and key advisor to the Head of School, the Board of Trustees, and the Leadership Team. The CFO is the lead liaison for the Finance, Audit, Investment and Physical Plant Committees and is an effective communicator to the full Board of Trustees on all financial matters.

The CFO oversees all required financial reporting, internal controls, cash, investment and asset management in a compliant manner, maintaining accurate and timely continuous records on the financial position of the school so that the institution remains financially stable. The CFO is instrumental in affirming compliance in all financial reporting requirements both internally and externally. With the Audit Committee, the CFO hires and manages the external audit firm to conduct the annual audit of the school’s financial records and financial position.

The CFO builds the multi-year operational budget models and capital budgets using the school’s resources in the most efficient manner, realigning existing resources when necessary to adapt to the changing landscape of the independent school world.

The CFO directs the Human Resource function of the school, assisting the Head of School with salary and benefits for new and existing employees, negotiating benefit programs with appropriate vendors, administering benefits to employees, overseeing the bi-weekly payroll process, and managing talent development and performance.

Besides oversight of the Finance Office, the CFO also administers other non-academic service centers of the school: Facilities and Construction Projects; Safety and Security; Risk Management inclusive of the school’s insurance program; Health Center; Food Services and Auxiliary operations.

  • Manages competing demands, especially during peak work load periods, and changes direction quickly to respond to market demands
  • Prepares detail-oriented budgets reflecting long-term strategic goals and shortterm operating goals and examines the nuances in purchasing, contracts and debt obligations
  • Connects with people through empathy and interpersonal skills and works well with faculty and staff at all levels within the school
  • Understands technology needed to operate successfully and embraces technological change to achieve efficiencies and cost effective results across the organization
  • Works enthusiastically and joyfully with a positive attitude and a good sense of humor

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field
  • CPA or MBA preferred
  • Demonstrated financial and operational acumen through work history in a complex working environment with progressive management expertise throughout career 
  • Familiarity with tax- exempt bond financing and compliance that is required
  • Experience in reallocating limited resources in order to develop and implement new programs
  • Proven knowledge of employee benefit plan administration, capital budgeting and facilities management
  • Work experience in a non-profit setting is preferred but individuals with the skills necessary to succeed from other backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
