Dean of Students

The Greenwood School seeks a full-time Dean of Students to begin July 1, 2019. The Dean of Students reports directly to the Assistant Head of School, and works closely with the leadership team, students, faculty, staff and parents.  The Dean of Students plays a central role in monitoring students’ needs and achievements, upholding the rules and guidelines of the institution, maintaining and creating a positive and engaged campus community and communicating with all stake holders.


  • Helping students reach their full potential through commitment, creativity and enthusiasm
  • Overseeing all student discipline and social-emotional conduct
  • Ensure the health and safety of students on campus as well as in the residential program
  • Oversee the integration of the day student population in the school community
  • Maintaining accurate records of student attendance and conduct
  • Communicating with parents regarding the well-being of their child
  • Coordinate the opening of year student orientation program and oversee special events
  • Working collaboratively to develop and implement school-wide programs that reinforce accountability, school culture, values and participation
  • Working collaboratively to develop leadership opportunities for the student community
  • Providing daily written updates to faculty and staff to ensure consistent communication and accountability regarding students’ daily conduct and discipline
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Director of Residential Life to provide a healthy and respectful residential environment
  • Overseeing and facilitating communication among faculty, staff and parents
  • Overseeing the school’s safety and emergency preparedness

Additional Responsibilities

  • Member of the Senior Leadership Team
  • Serve as an Administrative on Duty (AOD) every third weekend
  • Attend all school wide events as well as be present at school meals
  • Keep the head of school informed regarding student issues and campus life
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by and in support of the assistant head and head of school
  • An advanced degree (masters level) in education or counseling
  • Significant leadership experience preferably as a Dean of Students. An individual who has taught and interacted with students with diagnosed learning disabilities
  • An in-depth understanding of adolescents who have learning disabilities/complex learning profiles
  • Superior executive skills and the ability to work with a high level of consistency and integrity
  • Highly-developed communication skills, both verbal and written
  • A strong collaborator with school professionals
  • Knows or has the ability to quickly learn communication systems such as Whipple Hill
  • A sense of humor and optimism along with an unbridled faith in students’ ability to learn and grow
