Director of Annual Giving and Parent Relations

Position Description: 



Cardigan Mountain School—founded in 1945—is a junior boarding and day school for boys in grades six through nine, located in Canaan, New Hampshire. The Position

  1. Cultivate relationships around Cardigan Mountain School (CMS), in particular with current parents
  2. Meet the fundraising target for the Annual Fund for Cardigan (AF)
  3. Create goals, strategies, programs and reports to sustainably grow CMS’ relationships and annual giving capacity for the future
  4. Identify, qualify and steward major gifts prospects

This position reports to the Director of Development and International Relations.


  1. Setting goals and strategy
    1. Design and implement a comprehensive AF plan to meet the AF goal, including the Annual Cardigan Auction.
      1. Set dollar, participation, and qualitative goals for the comprehensive annual giving program. (schedule, partnerships, programs)
      2. Create, and implement strategies to achieve AF goals.
      3. Prepare weekly, monthly and other relevant AF reports for both internal and external needs.
      4. Work collaboratively with members of the Development Office to coordinate appropriate AF solicitations, including strategy and stewardship of top donors and prospects.
  2. Building new relationships and stewarding existing relationships
    1. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward assigned pool of managed prospects.
    2. Actively engage current and past parents in AF and school programs, including the auction, faculty/staff appreciation week, registration and family weekends
    3. Engage community members to create and implement programs that lead to annual giving.
  3. Soliciting AF gifts
    1. Create and manage a multidimensional appeal process and schedule that utilizes a variety of mediums (in person, appeals and programs) to solicit current and potential donors.
    2. Travel as needed to steward and solicit gifts.
    3. Work with the Communications Office to create marketing materials, as well as maintain the annual giving section and online giving form on the School’s website.
  4. Leverage technology
    1. Work with the associate director of development and database manager to build custom reports, appeal codes, special attributes, queries and exports as needed to better measure Measurable Objectives as defined below.
    2. Manage the AF leadership pipeline in Raiser’s Edge
    3. Utilize Raiser’s Edge to track visits, record contact notes and any other contact with donors.
    4. Stay up to date and aware of technology and tools that would improve annual giving
  5. Other
    1. Participate in Development and Auction Committee planning and meetings.
    2. Assist with coverage (timing/scorekeeping) of CMS athletic games as required each season.
    3. Support and attend on-campus and off-campus events, including weekends, as necessary.
    4. Execute Faculty and Staff Appreciation program with support of the Operations team.

Measurable Objectives

  1. Increase engagement with current parents through game coverage, volunteer programs and other relationship building tools
  2. Solicit and collect AF gifts earlier in the year, as measured by month to month, progress to goal versus years prior.
  3. Improve our ability to increase and meet future goals sustainably, as measured by
    1. Donor retention statistics
    2. Participation rates, both # of gifts and %, by key constituencies (alumni, parents, faculty/staff, trustees, etc.


  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a nonprofit environment, with a track record of success in fundraising. Experience promoting and managing previous annual giving programs is desirable.
  • Demonstrable and successful experience performing personal solicitations of annual fund gifts.
  • A strong sense of fundraising ethics and practices, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to develop and execute long-range plans.
  • A highly energetic and enthusiastic personality, with excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and as a team player.
  • The willingness and ability to represent Cardigan Mountain School professionally on campus and off-campus. (Some evenings and weekends required.)
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs.
  • Raiser’s Edge knowledge strongly preferred.
  • The ability to travel domestically and internationally to meet with donors and prospects.
  • Experience with advancement volunteer management is highly preferable.

This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position.
